Needless to say, 2005 is going to be a brand-new season. Following are the many rule adjustments that will go into effect Opening Day ’05.

New Playoff System
In the past, the playoff teams were put together based on votes. That will change this year. To begin, six players (three teams of two) will make the postseason, unlike the regular four. Players will qualify for offensive statistical consideration by playing in a minimum of 15 games. Those qualifying for best overall record must also play at least 15 games. To qualify for pitching statistical consideration, one must throw 15 innings. You MUST qualify for at least two of these categories to qualify for the postseason. Here’s how the six spots are earned:

» 1 spot is automatically awarded to the best overall record
» The remaining 5 spots will be determined by a 5x5 rotisserie-style points system, as follows:

Qualifying players will be ranked in the five offensive categories (On-base percentage, Home Runs/At Bat, RBI/At Bat, Runs/At Bat, and Total Bases/At Bat) and five pitching categories (Strikeouts/Inning, Wins, ERA, WHIP, and Saves). If you finish first in a category, you receive one point. If you finish second, you receive two points, and so on. Lowest score gains the #1 ranking and the other rankings fill out the remaining playoff spots.
