Veterans
win in dramatic fashion

It
was messy, dirty, snowy, wet, and ugly. But hey, it was wiffleball.
Wiffleball returned to Hastings Park for the first time since the
Wiff 2.0 Championship. On Saturday, the veteran tandem of Chris
Palmquist and Justin Hastings hosted the young'n twosome of Fred
Rogers and Craig Hastings. And it was played in the snow.
The humor began before the game when Commish Scott Hastings literally
snowblowed the basepaths. Props to Pops for doing so. Then, the
real humor ensued.
The first batter of the game showed the HMWL just why wiffleball
in the snow doesn't work. Craig Hastings ripped a groundball towards
right field, only to have it abruptly stop near the pitcher's mound
to get thrown out by older brother Justin. Fred Rogers then went
down on strikes to end the first half of the inning. The hometown
crew did much of the same, with Palmquist striking out, and J.Hastings
grounding out to the game's pitcher, C.Hastings.
Craig then got the game's first hit in the second, a nubber that
stopped in the snow for a base hit. Another groundout and strikeout
later, and the game was still knotted at zero. The veterans threatened
in the bottom half of the second, with the bases juiced and one
out...but a seemingly easy base hit for Palmquist turned into a
fielder's choice when Palmquist's hit got caught up in some snow
near second base, where runner Justin Hastings was forced out.
The youngn's again only managed one hit in the third, where Craig
hastings got his second single of the game. Back-to-back strikeouts
from Justin Hastings gave the veterans the opportunity to win the
game in their half of the third.
And that's exactly what happened.
J.Hastings drew a walk to lead off. Palmquist unfortunately followed
with a strikeout. But then Justin ended the game in dramatic fashion
with a game-winning, walk-off homer that barely cleared the right
field home run line, cracking the ball in the process.
After all was said and done, the veterans had beaten the youngn's
in a 3-inning messy, dirty, and crazy fall ball showdown. |

Fall Ball 2002 was nothing but comical. Any game where snowblowing
is involved is sure to provide some laughs. |
