Hastings ends day with a bang
June 1, 2005 | By Justin Hastings

Justin Hastings played in his first game on May 28th since Opening Day.

He would make sure the day would be a memorable one.

Hastings Park also welcomed two rookies to the forefront, Andy Foster and Greg Baggett. Foster would be the hero in this pitcher’s duel, as Will Kenney pitched four shutout innings for the 1-0 victory. Foster’s RBI-triple in the third was the difference.

In the game, TJ Collins made a bid to win play of the year. Will Kenney hit a slow roller towards right field, where Collins picked up the grounder, then dove towards first and successfully flipped the ball to Joe Greene for the out.

Game two was yet another HMWL one-run game. This one went into extras as Justin Hastings would battle the unlikely TJ Collins on the hill.

Collins, who has never been known as a pitching force in the HMWL, baffled the brothers Hastings and Foster for five shutout innings. Justin Hastings allowed only one hit in first four innings on the mound since Opening Day, but after a triple by Kenney, Hastings decided to intentionally walk Collins to face rookie Baggett.

Baggs had yet to get a hit on the day, but managed a SingleVille RBI-single off veteran Hastings to give his team a 1-0 victory.

Hastings, upset from the 1-0 loss in game two, would seek revenge in game three of the day.

Hastings and Collins would host Baggett and Kenney. Collins continued his brilliance from the mound in the first but would allow back-to-back solo homers in the 2nd.

Collins’s counterpart, Will Kenney, worked out of consecutive jams in the 1st and 2nd, taking a 2-0 lead into the home half of the third.

The 2nd inning was highlighted by another web gem, as Kenney absolutely robbed Justin Hastings of a hit. After ripping a ball off the left side of the house, Kenney dove full out from the pitcher’s mound onto the driveway to make the catch.

In the third, Kenney struck out Collins, then allowed a single and a walk to face Hastings. Hastings then deposited a 1-2 Kenney curveball into left fielf for a walk-off homer, giving he and Collins a 3-2 victory.
TJ Collins, seemingly out of nowhere, earned two victories from the bump. Prior to the gameday, Collins had a disturbing ERA of 42.00. But after his two strong performances, Collins quickly cut it to a very impressive 3.18.

Despite a strong performance, Craig Hastings failed to pick up his first win of the year, falling to a disappointing 0-6. Hastings has had some arm sorness of late and the entire league is greatly aware that his best pitching will come in the season's second half.
